UK’s Abstention and Concerns
The UK abstained from the resolution, citing the need for clearer acknowledgment of Israel’s inherent right to self-defense in line with the UN Charter. They also highlighted the exploitation of innocent Palestinian civilians as human shields by Hamas, emphasizing the significant impact on the Palestinian population due to Hamas’s actions.
Call for Urgent Action
The UN Human Rights Watch criticized the U.S.’s use of veto, emphasizing the urgent need for all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and ensure the delivery of vital aid to those in need. They also urged UN member countries to seek urgent action from the General Assembly to safeguard civilians and prevent further atrocities and loss of life.
