The U.S. exercised its veto power, obstructing the adoption of a Brazil-led draft resolution proposed to facilitate humanitarian pauses and aid access in the Gaza strip.

Despite expressing disappointment at the resolution’s lack of acknowledgment of Israel’s right to self-defense, the U.S. emphasized its active engagement, citing President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel. Stressing the need to protect civilian lives, the U.S. reiterated the importance of recognizing Israel’s self-defense rights, drawing attention to Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The recent session marked the second unsuccessful attempt within a few days, following the rejection of a Russian proposal that aimed to establish a humanitarian ceasefire. Expressing deep regret over the Council’s paralysis, Brazil’s representative emphasized the urgency of prompt and effective action to address the plight of hundreds of thousands of civilians in Gaza. Highlighting the necessity of collective action, he underscored the importance of efforts from various stakeholders to yield positive results and alleviate the suffering of the affected populace.

UK’s Abstention and Concerns

The UK abstained from the resolution, citing the need for clearer acknowledgment of Israel’s inherent right to self-defense in line with the UN Charter. They also highlighted the exploitation of innocent Palestinian civilians as human shields by Hamas, emphasizing the significant impact on the Palestinian population due to Hamas’s actions.

Call for Urgent Action

The UN Human Rights Watch criticized the U.S.’s use of veto, emphasizing the urgent need for all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and ensure the delivery of vital aid to those in need. They also urged UN member countries to seek urgent action from the General Assembly to safeguard civilians and prevent further atrocities and loss of life.
