PM Vishwakarma Scheme: Empowering Traditional Artisans and Craftsmen

Uplifting India’s Artistic Legacy Through Skill Development and Financial Support

The Union Cabinet’s recent approval of the ₹13,000 crore PM Vishwakarma scheme marks a significant step towards empowering traditional artisans and craftsmen, including weavers, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, laundry workers, and barbers. The scheme, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address, aims to foster skill development and provide essential support to uplift youth engaged in traditional artisanal work.

Empowering Traditional Artisans

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on August 15, introduced the Vishwakarma Yojana, a comprehensive initiative dedicated to nurturing the talents of individuals skilled in traditional craftsmanship. The scheme is projected to benefit various sections of society, particularly those from the OBC community, who have expertise in areas such as weaving, goldsmithing, blacksmithing, and barbering.

Financial Support and Skill Enhancement

The PM Vishwakarma scheme is designed to offer a multi-pronged approach towards skill enhancement and financial upliftment. In its first tranche, the government plans to extend basic and advanced skilling programs to eligible artisans. During the training period, participants will receive a stipend of ₹500 per day, facilitating their skill development journey. Moreover, a support system of up to ₹15,000 will be provided for the procurement of modern tools, enabling artisans to modernize their craft.

Access to Capital and Market Support

Recognizing the importance of financial support for sustaining traditional crafts, the scheme’s second tranche introduces credit assistance. Artisans will be eligible to receive credit support of up to ₹2 lakh, empowering them to invest in their craft and business. Additionally, market support will be extended, contributing to the creation of sustainable market channels for traditional artisanal products.

Key Features and Allocations

  • Skill Development: Basic and advanced skilling programs with a daily stipend of ₹500 during training.
  • Tool Procurement: Up to ₹15,000 support for purchasing modern tools.
  • Capital Assistance: Loan of up to ₹1 lakh with a maximum 5% interest rate.
  • Credit Support: Credit assistance of up to ₹2 lakh in the second tranche.
  • Market Enablement: Provision for market support to enhance market access.

A Vision of Empowerment

The PM Vishwakarma scheme embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of fostering skill development and empowerment among traditional artisans and craftsmen. With an initial allocation of ₹13,000 crore to ₹15,000 crore, this initiative is set to make a substantial impact on the lives of around 30 lakh artisans across the nation. It not only preserves the rich cultural heritage of traditional craftsmanship but also ensures the economic well-being of those who contribute to this artistic legacy.

In conclusion, the PM Vishwakarma scheme stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting traditional artisanal work. By providing skill enhancement, financial support, and market access, this initiative heralds a new era of growth and empowerment for India’s skilled artisans.
